The Greek film director Theo Angelopoulos, who has died aged 76 in a road accident, was an epic poet of the cinema, creating allegories of 20th-century Greek history and politics.

Theo Angelopoulos, who has died aged 76, was the leading Greek film-maker of his generation, with a visual style reminiscent of Michelangelo Antonioni and the Hungarian director Miklos Jancso.

His films were exceptionally long, often running to three or four hours. They consisted typically of a relatively small number of extended takes, lasting up to 10 minutes without a cut.
